A thought for you...from the Garden

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another.
The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month. ~Henry Van Dyke

Wow, hasn't that been the case this year. Here we are, more than half way through September, and we finally have some gorgeous Spring weather.

I thought I'd take some time today to do some quick snaps of the garden to show you.

My Bay tree is coming along fine. The herb garden isn't very big, so I'm trying to make it in to a topiary so I can under plant with something else.

Both curly and flat leaf parsley always do well here and I use it so much in salads and cooking. I have so much though, maybe a salsa verde is on the cards.

The Schwarzkopf are stunning. These are a succulent and have many varieties. This variety is 'Aeonium Arborium' and is sometimes called 'Black tree'. It can get a bit spindly, but when the warmer weather arrives it has a growth spurt. The colour is remarkable and it always looks so 'glossy'. Beautiful!

One of the azaleas is completely covered in blooms. The others have been spot flowering for a little while now and are looking a bit sad, but they usually have second flowering.

In the corner there is a weeping maple. The colours of the leaves go from red to purple to green. It's been there for about 10 years now and doesn't get much taller as it is a standard. Also, because it's a weeping maple all the new branches tend to grow up, then gradually weeps.

I wish I could remember what this succulent was. It wasn't looking too healthy a while ago, but like the Schwarzkopf it seems to have found new life.

The magnolia has grown so tall. A deciduous variety would have taken over the area. Although this variety is still magnificent, the flowers are a creamy white, but only last for a day or two.

Propagating plants has become a necessity at the moment as there is such a huge area to be planted at the holiday house. Where the new boardwalk is being built under the house, we will have to plant it out extensively to keep the dust and dirt down.

Out of the 3 Yukkas that were purchased about seven years ago, I think there has been up to 20 more that have been propagated from off cuts and from the trunk of the largest one recently taken out of the garden.

Time has not been kind to the Bonsai collection. Having plants like these takes such dedication and time and unfortunately, there is not a lot of either at the moment. It hasn't stopped the wisteria from flowering though. Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen...maybe.

Thank goodness for some warm Spring days to be able to enjoy the garden.

This quote is commonly known as 'seize the day', probably made more famous through Robin Williams' film, 'The Dead Poet's Society'.

The original source for the Latin phrase is the lyric poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BC – 8 BC), more widely known as Horace. The term is first found in Odes Book I:

Dum loquimur, fugerit invida
Aetas: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero

which translates as:
While we're talking, envious time is fleeing:
pluck the day, put no trust in the future.

"I don't have a nanny or a housekeeper, and I only have a cleaner for one hour each week. I finish work and go home. I cook the dinner. I run into Tesco and do the housework in the evening."

Victoria Beckham

My son Brendon and I have just been texting each other about orange and vanilla pannacotta.

Who would've thought a lot of what the boys and I would talk about is food, recipes, and cooking techniques when they got to this age.

Both the boys have had 'housekeeping' in their blood from a young age. They had to, as both their Dad and I had to work. Their Dad would come home, I'd have dinner ready, and the boys ready in PJ's, then I'd be off to work. When they got older, they had to wash and wipe up, make their beds, keep their rooms tidy (they were pretty good at this..although you'd never look in the cupboards!!). Their Dad was a bit of a stickler for the clean room.

I still feel regret for their teenage years being in such upheaval, but, as someone for the family recently said to me, "Are they in jail, do they do drugs, are you forever bailing them out of trouble...!, I don't think you should worry about the boys T".

In fact, I'm extremely proud of my boys, that was just me having one of my downers I have every now and then.

Now my youngest is going to have a little boy himself before the end of the year! I know how he loves cooking and his barby, I can just imagine him in the kitchen with the little fella later on, and you can bet he'll be cooking at Gran's when he comes to visit!

I'm sadly lacking in this department (on many fronts) at the moment.

And, how on earth did I get to the stage that I'm featuring quotes from Jon Bon Jovi!

We're not in Kansas anymore Toto!!

The Story line to the Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz, originally a book by L. Frank Baum, is best known in the film version starring Judy Garland.  At the beginning of this beloved fantasy story, we see Dorothy living on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. No one has much time for the young girl, and she is left to her own devices. She daydreams about a fantasy place "over the rainbow."  A big twister comes up, and she is knocked unconscious by a window frame blown into her bedroom. She dreams the house is lifted from its foundation by the wind and lands in Oz.
 --ooOOoo--

The farmhouse settles, in tact, in the Land of Oz. Dorothy survives but her house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, kills her which also frees the munchkins from the Wicked Witch's control.

Fortunately for Dorothy, that's only a fairytale but the reality of life in the Tornado alleys of America hit home this week with hundreds losing homes and communities, family, friends and loved ones.

Yet another catastrophe befalling the world this year.

"Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by this devastation, and we commend the heroic efforts of those who have been working tirelessly to respond to this disaster," President Obama said in a statement.

Spare a thought for those who are suffering and hope they have the same level of support and help, from communities near and far, our Australian counterparts had earlier this year.

Lest we Forget

A thought for you...

My 'Saturday Thought' has been missing for the last 2 weeks as I have been traveling for work. I made the long trek from Sydney to Brisbane two weeks ago, stayed for one night then headed to Toowoomba for the next 5 days.

It's hard to imagine the devastation they had in Toowoomba all those months ago, because you certainly can't tell. The town looks back to normal! We are a resilient lot, we Aussies!

I had a great time with 11 wonderful participants in a basic lending program. We all had a bit of fun, in amongst the 5 days work. There was a few technological glitches, which often happens when you teach in office spaces other than your own. I'm normally in a training environment in North Sydney.

At the end of the week, I drove back to Brisbane, then headed home to Sydney on the Saturday. Stopped in to see my Dad on the way home as I had some news to tell him! (Stay tuned...)

So I left this week's 'Saturday Thought' until today, Easter Sunday, to celebrate the significance of Easter, or if you are more inclined, to just enjoy a day of rest!

Easter tells us that life is to be interpreted
not simply in terms of things but in terms of ideals.
Charles M. Crowe - US Clergyman

I'm not a church going person, and I'm not a believer, but I understand why people believe. We have an older family member visiting this weekend, so out of respect for her, we all attended the Easter Service in the Green Cathedral at Pacific Palms on the NSW mid-north coast (near Forster). It was a very good service and included everyone, regular congregation members and those from other denominations. It's not what our visitor is used to, but she enjoyed it all the same.

For those of you who do believe, I understand there may be some feeling towards me for attending a service that I wouldn't normally attend. I have great respect for people who do believe and it was because of this respect, I attended the service with the family, sang the hymns, listened to the prayers and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. I respect other people's beliefs, having married (now divorced) into a fairly religious family. In return they also respect my position.

For those of you who haven't seen the Green Cathedral, and I was one of them until this morning, it is an open air ministry, with logs as pews, facing the beautiful Wallis Lake. In fact it's right ON the lake's edge, with the surrounding vegetation of palms and gums and other species of plants. The morning was perfect after a touch of rain last night. The relieving pastor and her helpers (all women), were on hand to pass out rubbish bin liners to sit on as the logs were still a bit wet from the overnight rain. All very casual and comfortable for someone like me. A bit of a laugh too, to be greeted by someone handing out rubbish bin liners!!

Here are a couple of photos of the Green Cathedral ministry...

Have a wonderful Easter break everyone and be safe on the roads...

A thought for you...

A bit late for my Saturday thought this week. All that's been happening in Japan has absorbed everyone, I'm sure!
I have no quote for today, just a thought going out to all who have suffered and are in need of the world's assistance now, in many parts of that beautiful country.
Today's photo is a view of the Zen Garden in Kyoto from my 2008 trip. A place for reflection and tranquility.
My thoughts are with them now...

'It is human nature to stand in the middle of a thing.'
Marianne Moore - Poet

As part of the Blogging Your Way eCourse with decor8, we are asked to describe/illustrate what our blogs are for, how we want them to affect other people through thoughts and images, and what 'market' does our blog fit into.
I have to say I am indecisive, because there are so many things I would like to do. My sewing, my papercraft, some styling, some colour, my fabric design.
I am unable to afford the time for a blog for each of them. So how do I go about making my blog cover all of that without it being TOO eclectic.
I thought I was on the right track, now I'm not so sure.
Maybe I need to rearrange a few things and have my 'pages' set up for each interest.
Next would be to give it a whole new look. Which I'm planning/working on at the moment. But what is my overall theme, and do I make it my main theme, then my Twitter and Facebook pages match!

AND do I move to Wordpress!
Oh the indecision!

I visited Handmade Market Canberra today and met the lovely Jennie from Posie Patchwork for the first time.It was so nice to meet someone from the blogosphere finally, eventhough she was very busy and we only spoke for a little bit. She's a real salesperson. After every sale, 'You can find more at Shop Handmade', was her tag as she was finishing a sale. You go Jennie!!

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain
way to succeed is always to try just one more time."
Thomas A Edison
Where would we be without someone like
Edison who always tried 'one more time'.
1868: Filed a patent application for his first invention, electric vote recorder.
1874: Major financial success for Edison as he invented the quadruplex telegraph. This invention is said to have helped the firm Western Union to save huge amount of money by increasing the number of messages a company could send without building new lines.
1875: With an electric pen, a small battery and an ink supply, the 'autographic press kit' helped businesses to make copies of documents.
1877: Hailed to be Edison's favorite work, phonograph, was a major breakthrough in helping people listen to songs and play music. With experiments on disks and tape, Edison invented the most famous phonograph. Edison also worked on a telephone transmitter that helped in better transfer of voices. In fact, he improved Alexander Graham bell's telephone services.
1878: Edison worked on improving electric light bulb invented by Sir Joesph Swan in England in 1878. Edison worked to improve the filament of the bulb so that it could burn brighter. He changed various features in the electric bulb and by working on electric bulbs, Edison gave this world one of the most reliable man-made sources of light.
1880: In Edison Lamp Works, Menlo park, commercial production of electric lamps is carried out.
1882: Edison files application for patent of 53 applications. The patents are filed for numerous inventions like electric lighting, electric railways, and secondary batteries.
1885: In this year, Edison patented nearly 17 inventions for telegraph and telephone systems.
1888: Filed for patent of 22 applications that include cylindrical records and photograph equipments.
1891: Kinetoscope and Kinetograph, one of the earliest motion picture devices are filed for patent by Edison.
1896: Edison Home Phonograph is introduced in the market by Edison. This phonograph was a spring moor driven phonograph.
1902: Edison uses several of Edison storage batteries in his specially designed electric vehicles. The most popular alkaline storage batteries get a kick start after this.
1906: The famed Royal Academy of Sciences in Sweden awards Edison a gold medal for his inventions in phonograph and incandescent bulb.
